Happy Thursday,
Lovelies!
Earlier this
week, I took my new 24-70mm L lens out for a spin. At events, having a zoom lens allows you to
get shots without stepping forward and backward. I love to shoot with “prime” lenses (lenses
that don’t zoom) because these lenses have less distortion around the edges and
allow you to have a narrower depth of field than zoom lenses.
For 2014, I
decided to upgrade one of my camera bodies and two lenses—a 50mm L prime lens
(awesome for portraits) and a 24-70mm L for events.
I took my
24-70mm L out for a spin at the annual holiday party of the Alaska State
Society. I’ve attended the holiday party
since 1999, and I’ve loved it ever year.
A great opportunity to catch up with Alaskan friends, and the holiday
party is scheduled around when then Anchorage Convention and Visitors Bureau is
in town with their Santa.
While others
wait in line for Santa at the mall, we Alaskans nosh on salmon and guzzle beer
(Alaska Brew) flown in from Alaska for the event. Our Santa greets everyone, and Santa’s
helpers with the Anchorage Convention and Visitors Bureau take your photo. Then, Santa gives the kids an
Anchorage-themed gift. Usually as a
moose.
Reason #1 to go
to Alaska: the people rock.
So does my
24-70mm-- more of less. It allowed me to get great
shots and focused well. The lens is
quiet and focuses quickly.
On the
downside, I like to be closer to my subjects. I hoped the 24-70mm would allow me to be closer to subjects while keeping them in the
frame over my 50mm… I don’t feel like it did.
In order to fit people into the 24-70mm frame, I feel like I still had
to be too far away from my subjects—yelling over the noise and moving people
out of the “line of fire.”
So, in 2015, I
may be looking for an even lower mm. Until then, still an awesome lens to add to the arsenal. Here are some of my test shots.
